I sewed and sewed last night and finished my little table cloth quilt top! I wasn't planning on having any borders on it, but I thought it needed them. So in came this pretty striped toile-ish print. With 4 patch corners.
This is such a quick and fun way to use up those 5 inch charm squares. Thank you to my friend Sabine for giving me this great idea! First, sew yourself a simple 9 patch.
Then chop it down the middle. Ok, I mean, carefully cut it evenly down the middle.
Then repeat that going in the other direction.
Now you have four blocks! Easy as pie. Once you have bunches of these fellas just arrange them randomly into rows. My little quilt used up two charm packs by the way. It measured 39 1/2 inches square before I added the 4 inch borders.
I can't wait to get this quilted so I can cover my ugly table enjoy my new quilt.
I told you last time that I would show you the other side of my huge living room. And when I say huge, I mean the smallest living room in the world. But, that's part of living in this tiny little cottage of a house. I love it.
I know I've told you before that we are slowly doing renovations on our house. When we bought the house that little doorway had been covered up with some yucky old bookshelves. So we removed those to open it back up. It's waiting to be finished with pretty trim. Which will be a very good thing because the exposed plaster corners are sharp! I always thought that old plaster walls would be....well....plastery. Like, chalky kind of. Let me tell you that they are not. The plaster is more like cement slathered on the walls. That back wall was also covered up with 70's wood paneling. And let's not forget the very, let's say, fragrant carpet. So glad that's gone!
Look! I'm auditioning my little quilt top on it's future table. That to the left there is my Grandmother's old piano. We fit a lot into this little room. And just to give a little more perspective, here's where the front door is.
Just opens up right into the living room. I could be playing the piano and accept a package from my UPS man all at the same time! That's if I could play the piano...which I can't. But I do have plans for a pretty and fluffy bench cushion for it, so that's something. I've actually thought about painting the piano, but I wouldn't want to send my Mother into cardiac arrest. She reads my blog every day, after reading this she might have had to leave work early to go home and have a cocktail. I won't paint it Mom!
You want to know what I like about you guys? I know that you won't look at that little Christmas quilt hanging above the tv and think that I'm a total loser for leaving it up there. I have my faults, and one of my goals here is to make all of you wonderful ladies feel better about yourselves. So when you're having a bad day just think, "At least I don't still have a Christmas quilt hanging up like that dummy Sarah." It's ok, I give you permission.
And last but not least, the definition of a picture window. The most beautiful house is right across the street.... just try to ignore the red monster truck.
Thanks for letting me share my little quilt with you, and taking the tour of the east wing of our estate. Next time we'll have some tea. x

Hi Sarah,
what a lovely living room you have! Everything looks so cosy...And the piano looks pretty as it is. You are right, don´t paint it. You know I love all these antique white furnitures, but the piano must stay brown. The little quilt is beautiful!
Hugs,
Sabine P.

I like it when you turn the lights on. :-)
Did you have to refinish the floors? They are beautiful. I have hardwood floors too.. but they are very sad. And it would take me forever to do them. But one day I will. Then I can put a pretty rug down like you have, and they will shine in the light.
Ok.. I am going to have to try that sew and slash method sometime.. it just looks so cool!

Can't say much about the Christmas quilt as we still have our Frosty the Snowman on our front porch for almost two years now! By the way, love the table cloth quilt!

Sarah, you are a hoot! I laughed so much reading your post. Especially about mom and the cocktails. :)
The little quilt is gorgeous, just like the one I love hanging over your couch. Thanks for the tutorial too, I want to try it one of these days!

You have such a lovely living room. Please don't paint the piano - it's a beautiful piece of furniture, all the more so for it having belonged to your grandmother. My husband gave me his grandmother's piano as a wedding gift and it has a key protecting cloth made by his great-grandmother. I adore it!
